Self-blame and shame are terrible burdens to bear and they so often intensify low self-esteem. You can use the mental strategy of getting a balanced perspective to re-evaluate your feelings of blame and Overcoming Depression by Paul Gilbert (listed in the Other Things that Might Help section at the end of this booklet), can help you work through feelings of shame. However, it is also worth taking some time to think through the consequences of letting go of self-blame as it can be stressful and you should be prepared for this. Stress can come from realizing that if you were not to blame then someone close to you, perhaps someone you love, was responsible for hurting you or not protecting you. Adjusting to this can be painful and destabilizing. It can give rise to new feelings, such as anger or intense disappointment, which you will now have to deal with. Stress can arise because you might begin to feel differently in yourself – more entitled to respect, less willing to be a doormat – and this can have an effect on your adult relationships, sometimes straining them.
